Scientists studying the end of UK wartime sugar rationing say limiting sugar before age two is linked to better brain health decades later, including a substantially lower risk of dementia.

Researchers analysed health records from 64,737 people in the UK Biobank who were born around the time sugar rationing ended in September 1953. When rationing stopped, average sugar intake was estimated to jump almost overnight from about 41 grams a day—roughly 10 sugar cubes—to about 80 grams, or 20 cubes. The team compared people exposed to rationing in the womb and early childhood with those born after sugar became freely available again.

The findings, published 29 July 2026 in the journal Neurology, suggest that people who experienced sugar restriction before birth and up to age two had a 23% lower risk of dementia than those born after rationing. Those with lower early sugar exposure also developed dementia an average of about 2.6 years later. Restriction through the first year was linked to a 21% lower risk. Study author Jiazhen Zheng, of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, said the results “suggest that limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health.”

The work builds on earlier “natural experiment” studies of postwar rationing that connected lower early sugar intake with reduced later risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Researchers tracked dementia diagnoses using medical records starting when participants were about 55 years old and followed them for up to 15 years. Some imaging findings also pointed to preserved gray-matter volume and fewer white-matter hyperintensities among those with early restriction. The study shows an association, not definitive proof that sugar alone caused the difference. Zheng stressed that further research is needed and that the findings do not support cutting essential calories or nutrients in pregnancy or infancy—only guideline-consistent limits on added and free sugars.

Data that would help include long-term cohorts that measure actual added-sugar intake in pregnancy and early childhood, plus trials or quasi-experiments that test whether modern sugar-reduction programs change midlife brain markers. The same early-window idea could be applied elsewhere—school-meal standards, hospital birth and well-baby materials, and product labeling that makes free sugars obvious to caregivers.
