Why Great News Network Uses AI

Great News Network was launched to show that progress is being made. Today, we want to do more than report it: we want to explore how progress might be accelerated.

We use AI to draft articles and investigate the topics behind them. AI can examine research, connect ideas across fields, identify unanswered questions, and explore more possible approaches in a short time than even a team of writers could feasibly investigate by hand.

That work leads to a distinct part of our coverage: possible next steps. We ask whether a promising result could be improved, whether an obstacle could be addressed, or whether an approach might work in another setting. We want these ideas to be creative and useful to the people already working on the problem.

A suggested idea is not a proven solution. We distinguish what the original sources established from what GNN proposes for further investigation. Where possible, we describe what would need to be tested or measured to find out whether an idea works.

AI drafts the article, but it does not decide what GNN publishes. Members of the editorial team read each draft, correct errors, check it for accuracy, and determine whether it is ready. The team is responsible for the final published content.

We continually improve the process behind this work: how AI explores a topic, identifies worthwhile questions, develops possible solutions, and explains their limitations. Our hope is that, over time, some of the ideas prompted by GNN’s stories will help others move promising progress further.
